5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Game Safari
This itinerary balances savannah game viewing, a scenic boat cruise and gorilla encounter.
Your driver-guide picks you up from Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in the morning and begins the scenic drive southwest toward Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park. En route, enjoy views of rolling hills, banana plantations, and traditional homesteads. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive, spotting zebras, elands, impalas, buffaloes, and diverse birdlife. Overnight and dinner at a lodge or camp near the park.
Rise early for a morning game drive through Lake Mburo’s acacia woodlands, home to zebras, warthogs, topis, and leopards for the lucky observer. In the afternoon, take a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Mburo itself, where hippos, crocodiles, and water birds such as fish eagles and kingfishers can be seen at close range.
After breakfast, depart for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for mountain gorillas. The drive winds through the beautiful terraced hills of southwestern Uganda, often called the “Switzerland of Africa.” Arrive in the afternoon, settle into your lodge, and enjoy a pre-trek briefing ahead of tomorrow’s adventure.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for registration and a detailed briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides. Venture into the dense rainforest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. Depending on the gorillas’ location, the trek may last between two and seven hours through the forest’s rugged terrain.
Once you find the gorillas, spend one extraordinary hour observing them as they feed, groom, nurture their young, and interact naturally. This close encounter with the world’s most endangered great apes is a truly unforgettable wildlife experience.
After returning from the trek, you may choose to join the optional Batwa Cultural Experience. Meet the indigenous Batwa people, the original forest dwellers of Bwindi, and learn about their traditional hunting techniques, medicinal plants, music, dance, and unique cultural heritage. The experience offers fascinating insights into their history while supporting local community conservation initiatives. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Depart Bwindi after breakfast for the short scenic drive to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa’s most beautiful lakes, dotted with islands and terraced hillsides. Spend the afternoon at leisure: enjoy a dugout canoe ride, swim in the bilharzia-free waters, hike between villages, or simply relax lakeside and take in the views. Overnight at a lakeshore lodge.
After breakfast, begin the long but scenic drive back to Entebbe, passing through the Ugandan countryside with stops for photos, refreshments, or a light lunch along the way. Arrive at Entebbe International Airport in time for your evening departure flight, bringing your 6-day Lake Mburo, Bwindi, and Lake Bunyonyi safari to a close.
