After check-in and a short rest, the afternoon is dedicated to exploring Burundi’s vibrant capital. A guided city tour introduces you to Lake Tanganyika’s shoreline, the bustling Central Market, and key landmarks such as the Independence Monument and the Belvedere viewpoint, which offers panoramic views over the city and lake.

Depending on time and interest, you may enjoy a short boat ride on Lake Tanganyika at sunset, spotting hippos and a variety of waterbirds while taking in the tranquil atmosphere. Dinner and overnight are in Bujumbura.

Meal Plan: Half Board

Accommodation choices (Bujumbura):

Luxury: Hotel Club du Lac Tanganyika – lakeside, upscale rooms, excellent dining and lake views.

Mid-range: Safari Gate Hotel or Burundi Palace Boutique Hotel – convenient for city tours and airport transfers, good comfort.

Budget-friendly: Urban Lodge or similar central city hotels near Avenue du Large – clean, affordable, and well located.

Day 2: Rusizi National Park & Waterfall Visit (via Gitega)

After an early breakfast, drive to Rusizi National Park, located just outside Bujumbura at the delta where the Rusizi River meets Lake Tanganyika. A boat excursion or guided walk along the river channels reveals rich birdlife, hippos, and scenic wetland landscapes. Rusizi is one of Burundi’s most accessible wildlife areas and a highlight for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

From Rusizi, proceed towards Gitega, the political capital, stopping en route for cultural and scenic experiences. Visit the Gishora Drum Sanctuary to witness traditional drumming, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage. Continue through tea plantations such as Teza, enjoying rolling green hills and photo opportunities. Depending on road conditions and time, visit Karera or nearby waterfalls for a refreshing break and dramatic scenery.

Arrive in Gitega in the late afternoon or evening, check into your hotel, and relax after a full day of exploration. Dinner and overnight are in Gitega.

Meal Plan: Full Board

Accommodation choices (Gitega):

Mid-range: Tropitel Gitega Hotel – well-rated, comfortable, good base for exploring Gitega and surrounding attractions.

The journey is a full-day transfer through central and eastern Burundi, passing rural landscapes, small towns, and agricultural areas. Arrive at Ruvubu in the late afternoon or evening. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a short game drive or nature walk along the park’s fringes, with chances to see antelopes, primates, and diverse bird species. Ruvubu offers a more rugged, wilderness-focused experience compared to Rusizi.
