Depart Kigali for the Grande Barrière border, crossing into Goma/Gisenyi with visa formalities handled en route. At Kibati Ranger Post, meet your guides and porters for a safety briefing before setting off around 10:00am. The 6–7 hour ascent climbs roughly 1,600m over 6.5km, moving from dense forest into stark lava fields as the air thins and cools. Reaching the crater rim in late afternoon, you’ll settle into basic summit shelters, bundled against near-freezing temperatures, with the lava lake’s orange glow lighting up the darkening sky below.
Wake early to watch dawn break over the crater — the lava lake’s glow is most vivid before daylight washes it out, making this the best window for photography. Spend the morning exploring different vantage points along the rim, taking in views across Virunga’s forested ranges toward Lake Kivu. By midday, begin the roughly 4-hour descent back to Kibati Ranger Post, retracing your route through the lava fields and forest. In the evening, transfer back toward the Goma/Gisenyi border area to overnight before your final crossing.
After breakfast, complete exit formalities at the border and cross back into Rwanda. From there, it’s a scenic drive back to Kigali, with some tour operators including a short city stop — craft markets, local sites — before dropping you at your hotel or the airport. This final day is mostly transit, giving you time to rest and reflect on two demanding but unforgettable days on one of the planet’s most active volcanoes.
