4-Day Virunga Gorilla Trek & Kigali City Tour

4 Days - 3 Nights | Virunga National Park - Kigali City Tour

4-Day Virunga Gorilla Trek & Kigali City Tour

Overview

Virunga National Park is Africa’s oldest national park and one of the last places on Earth where mountain gorillas roam free in volcanic rainforest. Combined with a stop in Kigali – one of the continent’s cleanest and most walkable capitals — this four-day route pairs a bucket-list wildlife encounter with an easy, rewarding city experience.

Itinerary

1

Day 1: Kigali to Virunga National Park

The journey begins in Kigali, Rwanda, the most convenient international gateway to the region. From there, it’s an overland transfer of roughly three hours to the Congolese border at Goma. After crossing, travelers continue to a nearby lodge, arriving in time to settle in before evening.

  • Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Mikeno Lodge

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

This is the heart of the trip. The day starts early with a briefing at park headquarters, where rangers assign each small group to a specific gorilla family based on the animals’ last known location. From there, the trek itself is unpredictable by nature — it can take anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours of hiking through dense volcanic forest, accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers who monitor the gorillas daily.

The reward is an hour spent in the presence of a wild gorilla family: watching them forage, rest, and interact at close range, an experience many describe as genuinely moving. The afternoon is generally left open, with some lodges offering a community visit or cultural program for travelers who want to fill the extra time. The group overnights near the park once again.

  • Meals: Full board — breakfast before the trek, a packed lunch to take into the forest, and dinner back at the lodge.
  • Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1

Day 3: Return to Kigali

The third day is a transition day. Travelers depart the lodge and retrace the route back through Goma, cross the border into Rwanda, and make the roughly three-hour drive back to Kigali. Evenings are typically left free — a good opportunity to rest, enjoy dinner in the city, or take a short walk before the final day’s sightseeing.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Onomo Hotel

Day 4: Kigali City Tour and Departure

The trip closes with a day exploring Rwanda’s capital. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most essential stop — a sobering but important way to understand the country’s history and its remarkable recovery. From there, the day continues at Kimironko Market, a lively spot for local crafts, textiles, and produce, followed by a walk through the Nyamirambo neighborhood or a visit to Inema Arts Center to see contemporary Rwandan art. Depending on flight schedules, the day ends with either a free afternoon or a direct transfer to the airport.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch
  • Accommodation: None unless requested
